Because everything is local, backing up is not optional. You'll find it at the very top of Settings under Backup & Restore.
Making a backup
A backup covers your data together with its media: photo sketches, diary photos, dog avatars and dog documents. It is written as a .dtbackup file, and you decide where it goes: Share passes it to another app, Save to file opens your device's file picker and keeps the correct filename — that is the right route for Google Drive.
Two things to be clear about. The file is not encrypted and not password-protected, so keep it somewhere you're happy with. And KynoPlan makes no automatic backups — it only shows a "Time to back up your data?" banner on the home screen once the last one is more than 30 days old. (That is separate from the backup Android itself performs, which the privacy policy covers.)
Restoring: four choices
Import Backup, pick the file — and then the app asks how to apply it. This choice is the most important moment of the whole operation:
- Add only — keep existing. New dogs, designs and competitions are added. Anything already on this device keeps exactly what it has — but the backup can still add things it is missing, such as a track recorded on your other phone. A track that is already here is left alone completely.
- Add & overwrite duplicates. New entries are added. A dog you already have is updated and keeps everything you have recorded since; designs, templates and competitions you already have are replaced by the backup's version.
- Choose what to import… Pick individual dogs, designs, templates or competitions; the designs and training sessions a chosen dog uses come with it. Nothing else is touched.
- Wipe and import. Delete everything on this device first, then import the backup as new. Settings reset to defaults.
After the import KynoPlan shows a report: what was applied, what was skipped, and what had to be created under a fresh identity. You cannot leave the screen while an import is running.
Sharing one thing instead of everything
Alongside the full backup, individual items can be passed on:
- Tracks and designs as a
.dttrackfile or a QR code. Tracks also as GPX, and as a report in text or PDF form. - Goals as a
.dtgoalfile or a QR code. - Evaluations as a JSON file, a QR code or a PDF.
- Competitions as a
.dteventfile. - Appointments as an
.icsfile. - Dog documents in their original format.
Individual dogs cannot be exported as their own file; that is what the selective restore is for. And note that only .dttrack opens straight from your file manager into KynoPlan. Backups, competitions and goals come in through the matching import inside the app.
QR codes
The QR route is meant for two devices side by side, with no file and no network. If the content doesn't fit into one code, KynoPlan shows several in turn — the display reads "QR n of m" — and the scanner accepts them in any order. On the other device, start the QR scanner at the top of the home screen.
